Enclosures / Inclosure Act
There were a number of UK Acts of Parliament, which enclosed common land (see also open field system) in the country. This meant that the rights that people once held, to graze animals on these areas when not planted by crops, were now being denied. Common usage is enclosure, but this is not the name of the acts.  Inclosure Acts for small areas had been passed sporadically since the 12th century but the vast majority of them were passed between 1750 and 1860. Leeds Grammar School
Founded in 1552 by Sir William Sheafield to provide free, subsidised or fee-paying education, according to need.  Its original location is thought to have been The Calls, by the River Aire, near the centre of the city.  The school merged with Leeds Girls High School in 2005 to become the Grammar School at Leeds.  A physical merger, however, to be put back a year until September 2008.

Batley Grammar School
Founded in 1612, the public school is located at Carlinghow Hill in Upper Batley, West Yorkshire. A former pupil of the school is generally referred to as an Old Batellian.

History of Education in Britain

History of Ragged Schools in Britain
In 1818 John Pounds began teaching poor children without charging fees. Thomas Guthrie helped to promote his idea of free schooling for working class children. Guthrie started a ragged school in Edinburgh and Sheriff Watson established another in Aberdeen. Lord Shaftesbury formed the Ragged School Union in 1844 and over the next eight years over 200 free schools for poor children were established in Britain.

School Attendance Medals
Attendance at school had always been a problem. Children would normally have to work from a young age. A child’s wages could mean the difference between hunger and starvation for a family. The Sandon Act of 1876 and the Mundella Act of 1880 made education compulsory throughout England.  These medals, the silver were awarded for good conduct and attendance for three years and gold after four years.

British Colonization of the Americas (1500's to 1600's)
Began under the Kingdom of England in the late 16th century, before reaching its peak after the Acts of Union 1707, which established the Kingdom of Great Britain. Colonies were established in North, Central and South America and in the Caribbean, and a protectorate was established in Hawaii. The British were one of the most important colonizers of the Americas.

Jamestown, USA (1607)
The first permanent English settlement in North America established at Jamestown in the Virginia Colony in 1607.  See also the Popham Colony.

Pier 21, Halifax Canada
Pier 21 opened in 1928 and was Canada's 'front door' to over a million immigrants, refugees, evacuee children, child migrants, home children, wartime evacuees, troops, veterans, war brides and their children. Cuper's Cove, Newfoundland (1610)
Established in 1610 by John Guy on behalf of Bristol's Society of Merchant Venturers, who had been given a charter by King James I of England to establish a colony on the island of Newfoundland. See also Harbour Grace, Newfoundland.

Colony of Avalon, Newfoundland (1500-1600's)
In 1620, George Calvert (1579/80-1632) purchased a parcel of land in Newfoundland from Sir William Vaughan. The land extended from just south of Aquaforte to Caplin Bay (now Calvert). The following year, Calvert's colonists set off for Ferryland under the leadership of governor Captain Edward Wynne. After the colony had been established, Calvert obtained a larger land grant from King James I of England, who awarded him "the Province of Avalon".  See also online list of early Ferryland Colonists and Early Settlement Schemes.
