The suburb is 4 mi (6 km) to the east of Leeds
city centre and lies in the LS15 Leeds postcode area. Cross Gates
is popular with local shoppers as an alternative to Leeds city
centre as it contains its own shopping centre - the Cross Gates
Arndale Centre now know as the Crossgates Shopping Centre - complete
with branches of some major High Street traders, in addition to
many more independent shops and local library serving the local
populace
Austhorpe is a civil parish in east Leeds, West
Yorkshire, England that is situated between Pendas Fields to the
north, Whitkirk to the west, Cross Gates to the north-west and
Colton to the south-west.
Halton Moor was recently the focus of television series CCTV
Cities in which journalist Donal MacIntyre focused on crime and
delinquency in the area. The programme showed arson on Bonfire
Night (during which police were attacked with fireworks), car
theft, joyriding. When the police attempted to seize a stolen
vehicle, they were forced to retreat when missiles were thrown
at them, the car was regained by the criminals and later found
abandoned after being used in a ram raid robbery.
Barwick-in-Elmet dates back to between 200-600 BC. The earthworks
at Wendel Hill and Hall Tower Hill are perhaps the oldest settlements
in the area. There is reference to an agricultural settlement
in the Domesday Book. From a taxation survey, it is known that
in 1379 there were 197 adults living in about 100 households.
Barwick-in-Elmet is a village 6 miles (10 km) east of the centre
of but still part of the City of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.
On 10 September 2008, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported that
Leeds City Council spent £119,000 each year on employing security
guards to patrol the car parks at East Leeds Leisure Centre, to
prevent car thefts and vandalism. This has led Leeds City Council
to consider moving the facilities to York Road. A Wetherby councillor
highlighted other troubled centres cost between £25,000 and £30,000
each year to patrol. It was suggested that centres where this
issue is not a problem suffered because of this and the YEP stated
that Bramley Baths, Aireborough (Guiseley), Pudsey, Scott Hall,
Kirkstall, Rothwell and Wetherby leisure centres could all be
improved if centres like Halton Moor and Middleton were closed.
The Cross Gates to Wetherby railway line opened in 1874, with
a station in nearby Scholes, enabling residents to commute to
Leeds city centre. This service remained running until 1965, when
the line closed under the Beeching Axe.
Throughout the 20th century the village grew with many modern
houses being built in and around the village by both private developers
and the local corporations. During this period many of the older
cottages in the village centre were converted into shops and other
small business premises.
For some time the Manor was in the ownership of the Gascoigne
family. In the seventeenth century and there are records indicating
that in the following century there were around 240 families living
in the parish. In 1720 the first known school in Barwick in Elmet
opened. By 1821 the parish had a population of 1,481.
Barwick-in-Elmet is referred to locally as simply Barwick, with
a silent 'w' pronounced "Bar-rick". In the Domesday
Book of 1086 the area was known as Berewit and Berewith. The village
is noted for its Maypole raising and lowering which is a public
event that typically brings large crow
Austhorpe is home to a large business park, Thorpe Park, and
this includes a large hotel. The housing is largely detached or
semi-detached. The area is 5 miles to the east of Leeds city centre,
and is close to the A463 dual carriageway and M1 motorway.
The amenities of West Park lie in two main areas, on Otley Road
there are several shops, a post office, a laundrette, a specialist
runners shop, an estate agency, Indian and Italian restaurants.
The main parade of shops on Otley Road has Dutch fronts. There
are amenities on the Moor Grange estate around Spen Lane and Butcher
Hill, which include: the West Park Centre (an educational facility
in the premises of the former West Park High School), Abbey Grange
Church of England High School, St Chad's Church of England Primary
School, St Andrew's church which also houses the offices of STEP
(Supporting The Elderly People), a doctor's surgery, a post office,
a beautician, hair salons, cafés, a Co-op supermarket, newsagents,
takeaways, a pet shop, a charity shop, a window and glazing store,
a florist, a launderette, and a public house called 'The Dalesman'.
Lawnswood School lies in between West Park and Lawnswood. West
Park lies close to Headingley and Horsforth which have larger
local centres.
Cross Gates is a large suburb in east Leeds, West Yorkshire,England.
It is situated between Seacroft to the north, Whitkirk and Colton
to the south, Killingbeck to the west and Austhorpe to the south
east. Manston and Pendas Fields are generally regarded as part
of Cross Gates.
It is one of only three places in the area to be explicitly associated
with the ancient Celtic kingdom of Elmet, the others being Scholes-in-Elmet
and Sherburn-in-Elmet. It is part of the civil parish of Barwick
in Elmet and Scholes and lies in the LS15 postcode district.
West Park is a suburb of north-west Leeds, West Yorkshire, England,
north of Headingley. It is a mixed area of private suburban housing
and suburban council estates. The name derives from its main park
(approximately 500 metres north-south by 300 metres east-west)
containing playing fields together with a conservation area of
grassy meadow ending in woodland. The largest housing estate in
West Park is Moor Grange.
Officially judging by the old boundaries of the former township
of Austhorpe, Austhorpe also includes the areas of Cross Gates,
Colton Common and Barrowby. Colton Common becameofficially part
of Colton when the Ingram family who resided in Temple Newsam,
bought the whole Austhorpe Lodge estate, selling it off and keeping
Colton Common as their own
